FARMER: I feed the world

IRONY: I feed you with problems

India is an influential agricultural powerhouse worldwide, having farmers as its backbone. But the irony is backbone (farmers) of the country is one of backward sector.

What hits your mind when you think about Indian farmers? Poverty! Illiteracy! Committing suicide! Thin looking brown guy whose half skeleton is visible! Waiting for rain!!??

Yes, that’s the harsh reality of our farmers.

Farmers are always being victim of nature’s action.

Farmers are already facing difficulties in coping up with climate change, biodiversity, soil erosion, infertility of land, poor storage facilities, insufficient water supply, over dependence on traditional crops, debt issues with high interest rates, in spite of all these, concerns have been raised regarding negative implications of COVID19 pandemic on the farm economy.

Current situation due to pandemic

The ongoing health crisis around COVID19 has affected all ways of life. There is huge interference in agricultural sector during this pandemic. Due to non-availability of laboures , harvesting and processing of crops have been affected. Transportation of agricultural products has become a biggest problem, even if they manage to arrange transportation, they are not are being able sell their yields due to restriction of time to sell. This is not only the barrier being faced, due to floods, crops are getting washed away, due to pandemic customers who buy from local market farmers are reducing as they are availing the option of online grocery shopping, global markets grabs local farmers marketing opportunities. In many places due to over production and deficit in sales, farmers are throwing their crops on to the roads as there is disruption for the sale of perishable crops and left empty handed.

Being indebted has been custom for farmers

Our farmers are binded with debts. They have incurred major debt for purchase of farm inputs, it is difficult for our farmers to get out of that debt as they are not getting appropriate price for their crops. Their debt is increasing to buy inputs for next harvest as there are no enough earnings from previous sales. As debt increases, interest keeps increasing without having any yield out of the investment on crops.

Psychological problems

Due to various problems, farmers face many psychological problems. Financial pressure is one amongst the major problem.  This may develop anxiety, farmers under goes into deep stress, depression, sleeping disorders, increase rate of substance abuse (alcohol consumption), helplessness, suicidal thoughts.

Statistical facts

A survey of more than 1110 farmers found 45% reported high stress, 58% had various level of anxiety and 35% reported depression.

According to earlier governments reports, in 2014, 5650 farmers committed suicide, in 2017 and 2018 on an average 10 farmers are committing suicide daily. In this pandemic year 2019 -20 suicide rate in farming sector 7.4% of the total suicides in the country, resulting deaths of 5957 farmers and 4324 agricultural labourers.

When will this stops? When will farmers have satisfaction in their work? When they will be free from debt? When can we see permanent smile on their faces? When will farmer stop being victim???

PROTECT AND PRESERVE

“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed” -Mahatma Gandhi

Wishing you  all Happy World Environmental Day : 2021, KAPMI

As we all know that every year that is today 5th June is celebrated as environmental day. This reminds people about their duties as an individual not to take mother earth for granted, importance of environment and also how we people cause problems to the environment.

World environment day is one of the biggest annual events organized by United Nations established in 1972. Which was the first day of the Stockholm conference on the human environment. In 1974 the theme of the environment day was ‘Only one Earth’ since then every year we have theme on environment day. People from more than 100 countries celebrate this day.

The main purpose of celebrating this day is to spread awareness about conservation of our environment. So, this year we have a theme that is environmental restoration. It is a process of recovering an impaired, damaged or destroyed ecosystem, for example- farmers in the eastern cape in south Africa have replanted indigenous thicket on 330 plots to kickstart, arguably one of the largest ecological experiment in the world.

The research shows that the indigenous plant “SPEAKBOOM” absorbed more carbon dioxide than most other trees in dry areas. This will allow farmers to earn an extra income by intaking carbon while rehabilitating their degraded land. The research also shows that the plant reduces erosion, builds up soil quality keep moisture and increases bio-diversity. Landscape restoration gives them the opportunity to generate alternative income while taking climate action. This is in the line with the UN’s decade ecosystem restoration which aims to restore 350 million HA by 2030.

The major aspect is as an individual what can we do to restore our environment. Government taking action is secondary, primarily it is important for every individual to contribute to the restoration of environment. If each person does their individual duties as responsible human, we can bring about great changes in the environment. There are lots of human activities that are affecting the environment like no proper waste management, soil erosion, deforestation, water pollution and many more. India is the second most populated country in the world hence it is imperative for us to have an efficient waste management system.

In order to have an efficient waste management system it is essential for us to segregate waste systematically and contribute for a better future. Deforestation is a major problem, nowadays people plant trees which is a good thing but only doing that is not going to solve the problem along with that we need to reduce the amount of trees we cut. We should play our role effectively as responsible individuals in every aspect simultaneously the government should impose stringent rules to protect the environment by imposing hefty fines against people disrupting the ecosystem.

The Global outbreak of Covid-19 has unprecedently affected human lives and daily activities but it has improved the air quality and reduced water pollution in most cities due to lockdown. There has been significant reduction in carbon emissions which has restored the ecosystem. Our greed has resulted in catastrophes which in return has affected our very own survival.

But disposal of medical waste like mask, gloves, disinfectant and the burden of untreated waste has also increased, multifold during the pandemic. We should dispose it in an effective manner so that it doesn’t pose as a threat to other beings around us.

World environment day is a platform to bring about positive change, every individual should realize the need to protect the environment which lies in one’s hand. As it is believed one small change can bring about a greater change to make the world a better place to live in.

READING IS TO THE MIND WHAT EXERCISE IS TO THE BODY

  1. Reading is good for your brain “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.” Joseph Addison penned this quote roughly 300 years ago, before modern science and research equipment could back up his claim. Today, however, scientific studies show that reading docs make you smarter. Reading a novel, for example, increases the blood flow and improves connectivity in the brain.
  2. Reading introduces you to new ideas and invites you to solve problems. Have you ever solved a case in a mystery book before you read the conclusion or predicted a turn of events in a novel? Your analytical thinking was stimulated merely from reading. Reading helps you detect patterns, solve problems, and assimilate new information as if you were living in the characters’ shoes.
  3. Reading makes you a better writer, when you read, your brain absorbs good writing techniques and vocabulary. In your own writing, you will unconsciously copy the writing styles of books that held your attention. Reading also enhances your vocabulary and spelling. New words appear in their natural context and you can deduce meaning from the surrounding words, while visually imprinting their spelling for accurate recall.
  4. Reading improves your conversational skills because reading increases your vocabulary and your knowledge of how to correctly use new words, Reading helps you clearly articulate what you want to say. The knowledge you gain from reading also gives you lots to talk about with others.
  5. Reading strengthens worldview and convictions when you read a book with a concurring worldview. it reinforces your convictions. If you read a book with an opposing worldview. it broadens your perspective and causes you to examine your beliefs and search for truth.
  6. Reading improves your self-discipline and consistency. With the modern barrage of media and instant technological information, our attention spans are getting shorter and shorter. Reading a book, unlike skimming a web page, forces you to focus. To get the most out of a story, you must fixate on the plot and complete the book. In doing this, your brain forms deep connections and practices concentration.
  7. Reading increases your knowledge of history, Reading can teach you historical politics, customs, cultures, economics, and intellect. Often these facts are set in a context of a story, making history easy to remember.
  8. Reading challenges your imagination as you read, you put yourself in the characters shoes. Your brain goes beyond the words on the page, imagining details such as appearances, emotions, and surroundings. William Styron wrote, “A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading”
